The effect of social distance measures on COVID-19 epidemics in Europe

2020. June 16.

Syreon researchers, Zoltán Vokó and János G. Pitter investigated the effect of social distance measures on COVID-19 epidemics in European countries and published their results in the Geroscience journal. Their analysis revealed that the unprecedented ‘stay-at-home” national policies meaningfully contributed to the suppression of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, which can be detected in a macro level time trend analysis. The findings allow for moderate optimism related to the gradual lifting of social distance measures in the general population, and call for specific attention to the protection of focal micro-societies by enriching high-risk elderly subjects, including nursing homes and chronic care facilities.
